5 Reasons Why I Choose to Be a Kpop Fangirl

My K-pop fangirl journey began in 2010 when a friend introduced me to Super Junior. From that moment, I was completely hooked. I’m not sure if it was just the music, their talent, or a combination of everything, but that single moment changed my life forever. Since then, I’ve become a full-fledged fangirl, now stanning more than five boy bands.

People often ask me why I do it. Why do I spend so much money on people who will never know me? Why bother learning about their lives when I’ll never personally talk to them? Here are the five reasons why I chose to be a K-pop fangirl:

5 Reasons Why I Choose to Be a Kpop Fangirl

  1. Kpop idols make me happy

Listening to music has always made me happy, but getting to know the people behind it—their personalities and stories—brings an extra layer of joy. When they win awards or achieve something, I feel genuinely happy for them, much like how you feel proud of your friends’ successes.

Sometimes, just seeing their smiles can brighten my day. I have a deep affection for my biases, especially Cha Hakyeon (VIXX) and Lee Hyukjae (Super Junior). I’m not sure if you’d call it love or a crush, but there’s a deeper connection there. Simply seeing them makes me happy, much like how you’d feel when you see someone you’re interested in.

  1. Kpop idols inspire me

Being a K-pop idol isn’t easy. Not everyone gets the chance to debut and live their dream. They inspire me because, whenever I see them on stage, I think about all the sacrifices they made to get there. It reminds me that if they could achieve their dreams through hard work and perseverance, so can I.

  1. Kpop idols gave me a chance to meet other people

K-pop definitely strengthened my friendship with my high school friends, but it also introduced me to a whole community of fellow fangirls and fanboys. Along the way, I’ve met so many amazing people who share the same interests, which has widened my circle of friends and made fangirling even more fun and enjoyable.

  1. Kpop helped me go outside of my comfort zone

K-pop taught me how to be independent. When my friendship with my high school friends ended, I decided to continue fangirling on my own. I started going to concerts by myself, buying tickets on my own, and doing everything solo. It turned out to be a rewarding experience because I proved to myself that I can achieve anything as long as I set my mind to it.

  1. Kpop gives me a reason to live

When I’m feeling really down, I turn to K-pop. It’s like escaping into a world where everything is fine. I even wrote a novel imagining K-pop idols as my friends and family—it ended up filling five notebooks, my longest novel yet. K-pop gives me a reason to keep going. If they can handle all the challenges in their lives, then I can too.

K-pop changed my life, and I’ll always be grateful to the groups I follow. Even though I’m not as active as a fangirl anymore, I still make it a point to attend their concerts to show my appreciation and support.
