I’ve been searching for a part-time job for six months now, and I still haven’t had any luck. It’s been incredibly stressful because I really need the extra income. This wasn’t the case years ago, so I started wondering what has changed. Here are a few reasons I’ve come up with:
Too Much Competition
During the pandemic, many people lost their jobs. This means there are a lot more people looking for work now, making the job market incredibly competitive. Even when I apply for jobs that match my expertise, the sheer number of applicants makes it tough. Some might even be willing to accept lower pay, which doesn’t help my chances.
Companies Want Versatile and Flexible Workers
While my skillset is adaptable, there are still limits. I’ve seen job postings looking for someone who can handle HR, marketing, and accounting all in one. While I excel in marketing, I can’t cover all those bases. Companies are looking for people who can wear multiple hats, and that’s challenging unless you have a lot of experience in different fields.
Non-Negotiables
I have my non-negotiables when it comes to jobs. I prefer remote work, day shifts, or at least flexible hours. Unfortunately, many part-time positions require night shifts or in-office work, which doesn’t fit with my needs.
Finding a part-time job—or even a full-time one—has become much harder these days. I hope everyone looking for work finds what they need. Remember, don’t settle for a job that doesn’t fit you just to avoid burnout. Sometimes we might feel like we don’t have a choice, but it’s better than resigning after a few weeks or ending up hospitalized from stress.
