My Unexpected Formula 1 Era

I didn’t expect to get into Formula 1.

If I’m being honest, racing was never really on my radar. I knew Formula 1 existed, of course. I’d occasionally see clips online or hear people talk about teams and drivers, but it always felt like a sport that required a lot of background knowledge, rules, teams, history, rivalries.

Then, once again, my boyfriend made a recommendation.

He suggested that we watch the Formula 1 documentary series. At first, I thought it would just be something interesting to try for an episode or two. I didn’t expect much beyond learning a few things about racing.

But somewhere along the way, something clicked.

What surprised me the most wasn’t just the racing, it was the storytelling behind it. The rivalries, the pressure, the team strategies, the personalities of the drivers, and the constant fight for milliseconds on the track. Suddenly Formula 1 wasn’t just cars going fast in circles. It was drama, ambition, politics, teamwork, and raw determination all rolled into one.

Before I knew it, I was hooked.

Episode after episode, I found myself getting more invested in the drivers and the teams. I started learning who drives for which team, how strategies affect the outcome of races, and how much pressure these drivers face every single weekend.

And then I found myself picking favorites.

Right now, the driver I’m rooting for the most is Kimi Antonelli. There’s something exciting about following a young driver with so much potential. Watching someone early in their career, seeing them grow, improve, and fight their way up the grid, it makes the whole experience feel even more personal.

So now I have someone to cheer for.

What started as “try this documentary” has turned into something else entirely. Now my boyfriend and I are both looking forward to the 2026 Formula 1 Championship, and it’s become one of those things we get excited about together, following updates, watching races, and seeing how the season unfolds.

It’s funny how these things happen.

First it was Star Wars because of a recommendation. Now it’s Formula 1.

All it took was one suggestion, a few episodes, and suddenly I went from someone who barely knew the sport to someone eagerly waiting for the next championship season and cheering for my driver along the way.

So here I am, unexpectedly entering my Formula 1 era.

And honestly? I’m not mad about it.
