After our engagement, moving in together is the next step in our relationship, and while we’re incredibly excited. We’ve learned that there’s a lot more preparation involved than simply packing our things and showing up on moving day.
With our move-in date set for November, here’s how we’re getting ready for this new chapter of our lives.
1. Visit and Inspect the Unit
Before getting too excited about decorating, we made sure to visit the unit and inspect everything carefully. We checked the layout, storage spaces, lighting, water pressure, electrical outlets, and overall condition of the apartment.
Seeing the space in person helped us visualize where our furniture would go and what items we would actually need.
2. Create a Budget
One of the first things we discussed was money.
Moving comes with more expenses than expected, including:
- Advance rent and security deposits
- Utility setup fees
- Furniture purchases
- Home essentials
- Moving expenses
- Emergency funds
Creating a budget early helps us avoid overspending and keeps us focused on our financial goals.
3. Start Saving for Move-In Costs
Since November is still a few months away, we’re taking advantage of the time by setting aside money each month.
Instead of buying everything immediately, we’re prioritizing our savings first so we can comfortably cover rent, deposits, and unexpected expenses once move-in day arrives.
4. Make a Home Essentials Checklist
One thing we’ve quickly realized is that furnishing a home involves more than just buying a bed and a couch.
We’ve started listing everything we’ll need, including:
Bedroom
- Bed frame
- Mattress
- Pillows
- Bedsheets
- Storage organizers
Kitchen
- Rice cooker
- Cookware
- Plates and utensils
- Food containers
- Dish rack
Living Area
- Sofa or chairs
- Coffee table
- TV stand
Cleaning Supplies
- Broom and dustpan
- Mop
- Trash bins
- Cleaning products
Creating a checklist helps us stay organized and prevents us from forgetting important items.
5. Research Furniture and Appliances
Lately, we’ve been spending a lot of time browsing furniture stores, online marketplaces, and home décor inspiration posts.
Rather than buying impulsively, we’re comparing prices, reading reviews, and identifying which items are worth investing in and which can wait until later.
6. Decide What We Already Have
Before purchasing new items, we’re taking inventory of what we already own.
Some things can be brought from our current homes, which helps reduce costs and avoid unnecessary duplicates.
7. Talk About Household Expectations
Beyond the furniture and finances, moving in together also means adjusting to a shared living space.
We’re having conversations about:
- Chores and responsibilities
- Cleaning schedules
- Spending habits
- Personal space
- Daily routines
These discussions may not be the most exciting part of moving, but they’re just as important as buying furniture.
8. Prepare for the Unexpected
No matter how carefully you plan, there will always be surprise expenses.
That’s why we’re setting aside a small emergency fund specifically for move-in costs. It’s a simple way to reduce stress and give ourselves a financial cushion.
Looking Forward to November
As excited as we are for move-in day, I’ve realized that preparing for it is part of the journey. From checking out the unit to creating endless shopping lists and saving for expenses, every step makes our future home feel a little more real.
We’re still a work in progress, but with each item we check off our list, November feels closer and closer and we can’t wait to finally start this new chapter together.
