Turning 50 is a milestone worth celebrating, and I wanted to make sure my mom’s birthday was more than just another dinner or gift. This year, I wanted to thank her for everything she’s done for me in a way she’d never forget.
Before our trip, I bought her an iPhone 17 Pro, knowing she’d been wanting a new phone for a while. Then came the biggest surprise of all, I told her we were flying to Vietnam for her birthday. I paid for both of our shares because I wanted this entire experience to be my gift to her. My aunt also joined us, making it a special family trip filled with laughter, new experiences, and memories we’ll treasure forever.
Travel has a way of creating memories that last far longer than material gifts, and Vietnam turned out to be the perfect place for my mom’s milestone celebration.

From the moment we landed, we were welcomed by bustling streets, endless motorbikes, delicious aromas drifting from every corner, and some of the friendliest people we’ve ever met. Every day brought something new to discover.
Walking Through Hanoi’s Famous Train Street
One of the places I had been looking forward to the most was Train Street.
Seeing a train pass just inches away from homes and cafés was surreal. We grabbed drinks, waited for the train, and watched as everyone quickly cleared the tracks before it thundered through. It was one of those experiences that looked unbelievable in photos but seeing it in person was something else entirely.
My mom couldn’t stop smiling, and that’s exactly why I wanted her there.
The Beautiful Colors of Incense Village
Another unforgettable stop was Incense Village.
Watching locals arrange thousands of brightly colored incense sticks into beautiful circular patterns felt like walking through a piece of art. The vibrant reds, pinks, yellows, and purples made every corner photo-worthy, but beyond the photos, it was fascinating to learn about a craft that has been passed down for generations.
It reminded us that travel isn’t just about sightseeing, it’s about appreciating different cultures and traditions.
Feeling Like We Were in Europe at Mega Grand World
Mega Grand World surprised us.
The colorful buildings, canals, and lively atmosphere made it feel like we had stepped into another country altogether. We wandered around, took countless photos and simply enjoyed taking things slowly.
Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t packed with activities, they’re just about spending quality time together.
Cruising Through the Beauty of Ha Long Bay
No Vietnam itinerary feels complete without visiting Ha Long Bay, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
Boarding the cruise and sailing through the limestone islands felt peaceful after the busy streets of Hanoi. The scenery looked like something from a postcard, with towering rock formations rising from emerald waters.
It was one of those places that reminds you how incredible nature can be.
Dressing Up in Traditional Vietnamese Clothing
One of the highlights of the trip was trying on traditional Vietnamese attire.
It was a fun way to immerse ourselves in the local culture, and my mom and aunt absolutely loved the experience. We laughed while taking photos, admired the beautiful designs, and enjoyed pretending we were locals for a little while.
Those photos have become some of my favorites from the entire trip.
Falling in Love with Vietnamese Food
If there’s one thing Vietnam does exceptionally well, it’s food.
We made it our mission to try as many local dishes as we could, and we definitely didn’t disappoint ourselves.
Some of our favorites included:
- Fresh spring rolls
- Bun Cha
- Bánh Xèo
- Bánh Mì
- Chả Cá
- Egg coffee
- Plenty of other local dishes we discovered along the way
Every meal felt authentic, fresh, and packed with flavor. Some of the best food came from small restaurants we stumbled upon while exploring the city.
Needless to say, we never went hungry.
More Than Just a Vacation
Looking back, this trip wasn’t really about Vietnam.
It was about celebrating my mom.
Growing up, our parents often sacrifice their own dreams so we can chase ours. Being able to return even a small part of that love by taking my mom on this journey felt incredibly rewarding.
Seeing her excited over new places, trying unfamiliar foods, taking endless photos, and simply enjoying herself reminded me why experiences are often the best gifts.
Until the Next Adventure
As our trip came to an end, I realized something.
The iPhone 17 Pro will eventually become an older model, but the memories we captured with it never will.
Watching my mom laugh, admire the colorful incense bundles, cruise through the breathtaking waters of Ha Long Bay, proudly wear traditional Vietnamese clothing, and enjoy every bite of Vietnamese food reminded me that the best gifts aren’t always things, they’re moments.
For her 50th birthday, I was grateful to give her both: something she could use every day and an experience she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.
Happy 50th, Mom. Thank you for giving me a lifetime of love. I’m so happy I could give a little of it back.
