God Really Does Listen, Just Not Always on Our Timeline

For the longest time, I kept asking God for one thing: a new job.

Not because I wanted something bigger or more prestigious, but because I no longer felt at peace where I was. The environment had become toxic, and every day I worried about my job security. I found myself constantly questioning whether I still belonged there. I prayed that God would open a new door for me, a full-time job where I could finally feel valued, secure, and happy again.

I applied everywhere. I updated my résumé more times than I could count. I spent countless evenings scrolling through job listings, tailoring cover letters, and preparing for interviews that sometimes never came. Every rejection email, or worse, the silence after applying, felt discouraging.

Weeks turned into months. Months turned into more than a year.

There were moments when I wondered if God was even listening. I questioned why everyone around me seemed to be moving forward while I felt stuck in the same place. It was frustrating, exhausting, and honestly heartbreaking.

But somewhere along the way, I realized that just because God is silent doesn’t mean He’s absent.

Instead of continuing to focus only on finding another full-time job, I decided to look for part-time opportunities. I wasn’t expecting much. I simply wanted another source of income while I continued my search.

Then something unexpected happened. Within just a couple of months, I landed not one but two part-time jobs.

It made me stop and think. For over a year, I had been asking God for one specific answer: “Please give me a new full-time job.” But maybe God had a different plan all along.

Maybe He wasn’t saying “no.” Maybe He was saying, “Not that. I have something else for you.”

Looking back now, I can see how perfectly everything unfolded. These part-time opportunities gave me extra income, allowed me to grow my skills, and offered a flexibility that I never would have had in another full-time role. They reminded me that sometimes we become so focused on one door that we fail to notice God quietly opening another.

The hardest part about waiting is that you don’t know why you’re waiting. You only understand it once you’ve reached the other side.

I used to think unanswered prayers meant God wasn’t listening. Now I believe they often mean He’s preparing something we haven’t imagined yet.

Does that mean my journey is over? Not at all. I still don’t know what my long-term career will look like. I don’t know if I’ll eventually leave my current full-time job or if another opportunity will come along someday.

But I do know this: God has been faithful every step of the way. He didn’t answer my prayer in the way I expected, but He answered it in the way I needed.

And honestly? It was worth the wait.

If you’re reading this while waiting for something, a job, a breakthrough, healing, or an answer you’ve been praying for, I hope this encourages you not to lose faith. Waiting doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten. Sometimes God is simply writing a different story than the one you’ve planned for yourself.
